Rei-ki comfort for sudden infection
By Jan Hicks
Bournemouth, Dorset UK

The whole family had been camping on a Saturday night and thought it would start the school holidays off just right. We had had a wonderful time and the children had been in full spirits. On the Sunday afternoon we arrived back home feeling drained as it had been a late night. The boys, although tired, seemed to have boundless energy and were messing around way after their bedtime. As it was the holidays we weren't too worried and left them to it.

On Monday morning Matthew, our youngest aged 11 years, came into bed for the usual cuddle and we talked of the weekend and how much we all had enjoyed it. He seemed his usual self until about 10 am. Then he went back to bed and said he wasn't feeling too well. I thought that it was tiredness after being so active and two late nights. Checking on him a little later his temperature had increased and I gave him a paracetamol and a glass of water. He wasn't hungry, so I impressed on him to drink, which he did.

By midday I was concerned that the temperature was not going down so I tried rei-ki on him. I especially rei-ki'd his head. Why, I was not sure, but by 12:12pm he was getting delirious. I tried to arrange an appointment at the doctors. I was told that there weren't any available and should phone back at 2pm. I'm not sure what made me check but I happened to roll Matty's sleeve back and saw a purplish rash on his upper arm. I did the glass tumbler test and the rash did not disappear. I immediately phoned the doctor's surgery again and was told to bring him straight in.

On arrival we sat in the doctor's surgery, waiting. I was still giving rei-ki and keeping one hand on him all the time. The doctor called us in, took one look at Matty and had him lie down on the couch. His limbs were starting to hurt and he had stiff shoulders and pain in his lower back. Another doctor, whom we also knew, was called. Things happened quickly then. I was by Matty with my hands on his head and arm, talking to him all the time. The doctor told me that what I had suspected was a possibility, "Meningitis".

By now an ambulance had been called and they were injecting Matthew with antibiotics, taking temperature and blood pressure. They had tried to get a line into his vein but the doctor was unable to do so as it had collapsed, another sign of meningitis.

The ride in the ambulance seemed an age but we eventually got there and were shown into the special children's unit. I continued to keep my hands on whenever possible while the doctors tried a line into Matthew's other hand, and were unable to get one in. Another attempt was successful but by now Matty's feet and hands had started to get very cold. There semed to be another rash on his chest too. The rash on his arm, although not all over, was enough to cause concern. He was admitted to hospital. I continued to rei-ki him.

The next morning the nurses were amazed at the speed of Matthew's recovery. He was still in quarantine and the family and friends with us when we had been camping had all been given antibiotics. Matthew's school had also been notified. The blood that had been taken for tests had come back negative. They still couldn't be sure that Matthew had contracted meningitis as the antibiotics had been given so quickly. He had to continue with the antibiotics for ten days, as he had all the symptoms of meningitis. The doctors and nurses were amazed at how quickly he had bounced back.

I firmly believe that without rei-ki, things would have been a lot worse. I thank God that Matthew has come through this, and I thank my sister for introducing me to Rei-ki through Barbara McGregor.

Medical mishap saved by rei-ki
By Adrienne Lohmeyer
Adelaide, South Australia
Usui Rei-ki Co-ordinator for Sth Australia

A teaching colleague showed me her badly swollen arm, inside the elbow. She had returned from having a CT scan, but after injecting the radioactive dye it was realised that the needle had missed the vein and the dye had entered the tissue by mistake. While the second injection was successful, the arm was left extremely enlarged and very uncomfortable.

She was warned that the area could become bruised and that she should expect the discomfort to last for some time. We sat together for about 20 minutes, eating lunch while I rei-ki'd the swollen area. At the end of this time the swelling was reduced to a golf ball sized lump, which had disappeared completely by morning without any bruising.

Bone density improved after Rei-ki
By Ron Leitch
Toowong, Queensland, Australia

A few months before I did my Rei-ki I course I was x-rayed by a chiropractor who pointed out that my bone density was low. He showed me the x-rays of my bones, indicating that I could have problems with osteoporosis. Both my mother and sister have osteoporosis. I was put on calcium supplements but only for slowing down the rate of bone loss, as there was no cure.

Since doing Rei-ki I in October '98 I have practised rei-ki for 2-3 hours per day and increased this since doing Rei-ki II in April '99. In May '99 I had my bone density checked and it was above average.

At my wedding the following month, I was telling someone I was moving house because I have osteoporosis and need to live in a cleaner environment. Then I remembered Barbara had pointed out that I should have said "Had osteoporosis". It turned out to be true, thanks to Rei-ki.

Rei-ki support for 4-yr old
By Julie Osman, Singapore

My daughter was born with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex. It was not diagnosed until she was about five months old. We realised something was wrong when she threw infantile spasms and fits, and this went on until we found a suitable drug which could control it. Unfortunately, this genetic disease has no known cure. It is something like Down's Syndrome, with a mutation in the chromosome formation.

After reading much and having repeated MRI scans, we realised her poor prognosis. Her scans were riddled with patches in the brain. At five months she already had multiple growths in the cerebral region. That was in 1995.

As any parents would, we were shattered and I began to seek help in all directions of life, from China, India and Arabia, and managed to make contact with the Tuberous Sclerosis Centre in San Francisco. Like any mother, I was desperate, and I knew time was running out.

By some luck, I met up with an old school mate. When I gathered enough strength to mention it again, I did. It gave me a totally different angle for hope. Jacqueline introduced me to rei-ki. She tried her best to explain and describe rei-ki and its possibilities and wonders. Desperate as I was, I was willing to try anything. I found myself enrolled in the Rei-ki I course and before I knew it many rei-ki members wanted to help my daughter with rei-ki.

She had a healing crisis, which sent me panicking back to the hospitals for more scans and EEGs, but the rei-ki went on. I was amazed when the vomiting stopped and she began to gain weight in a month.
I have tried to rei-ki my daughter directly, but find it impossible, as she pushes me away, which I think is related to the heat that passes through my palms, so the only way is rei-ki II.

You see my daughter was given till about age four to live. Now everyday past her fourth birthday is a day of triumph and rei-ki brings hope. I must add that I was amazed at the course itself. It isn't just the energy transfer but the whole content - it's indescribable. I found a whole new self within me. I let go of the despair that had accumulated. Th
ank you to everyone at my Rei-ki course.

A visit to Beth Gray
By Keven Duff

Beth looked radiant when Makoto Nakamura, the Hong Kong co-ordinator and I visited her on our way back from the Reno Rei-ki seminar in the USA. She was glowing and had one of the most beautiful smiles that I have ever seen. We presented her with a large bunch of yellow roses (her favorite) on behalf of Barbara, which brought tears to her eyes, and we shared many stories of the ways in which Barbara is carrying forward with the network and remaining true to the Rei-ki teachings and traditions.

Beth emphasized several times the importance of the mind/body connections and maintaining only the highest standards of teaching and practice where Rei-ki is concerned. She also expressed great distress and anger over the ways that Rei-ki is now being 'taught' by many people. During our visit, we put Beth up on a massage table and gave her about three hours of Rei-ki. She kept patting our hands and telling us how wonderful this was for her.

Additionally Beth had some documents, passed to her by Mrs Takata. Mako gave her a short translation from the Japanese, which she found very exciting as she had never known their exact meaning.

I spent a lot of time telling Beth Rei-ki stories from our students and she was delighted by this. She indicated that she no longer had the chance to hear many such stories and reading 'Rei-ki Happenings' is too difficult for her. I would like to suggest that you contact your local co-ordinators and put some of your Rei-ki stories on tape so that they can be sent to Beth. This would be one of the best gifts that we can give her. (Please send a duplicate for our records too).

This visit was so special for Mako and I that we left with great reluctance. We promised to come back as soon as possible for our next visit.

Rei-ki II assists transition
By Susan Stretch
Kojonup, Western Australia

As a newly graduated Rei-ki II student without any paramedical qualifications, I faced the challenge of assisting a friend through the final stage of her terminal illness with a little trepidation. Some weeks earlier our country physician had readily accepted a Barbara McGregor rei-ki pamphlet from me, and displayed her lecture announcement at his surgery, so I was encouraged by his endorsement of my undertaking rei-ki for this patient and by the easy reception given me by our local hospital staff. This experience was so revealing of the benefit rei-ki can bring to the patient and grieving family members that I would like to encourage all rei-ki graduates to share it whenever the necessity arises.

Cleaning out the birdcage
By Barbara McGregor

In the last few days of the twentieth century the urge to have a big clean up became imperative. Spring cleaning is a great concept when applied to cupboards, wardrobes and storerooms. The washing machine is running overtime and the dry cleaners have scored a bonanza. A couple of days fasting and resting, followed by a long soak in a bath - better still, an effervescent spa - does much the same for the body.

What I see also is that the universal flow has been insistently releasing blockages in relationships. How often do we cling to the known and defined in our personal safety zones, even if they've become like an overlooked birdcage, confining the occupant, with accumulated litter a potential health hazard.

It's time to open the cage door and test your wings. Flying in the open is not only a powerful metaphor for freedom, it provides a startlingly different perspective. You know you can do it, but doing it is another thing entirely.

Transglobal Vigil
By Errol Leembruggen
Perth, Western Australia
Usui Reiki Co-ordinator, Western Australia

Recently, I had a profound confirmation rei-ki II does work, with the passing of my younger sister, Yvonne (50) who lost her battle with liver cancer in early October '99. I shared a very close bond with her. I had been working with Yvonne, sending distant healing via rei-ki II to her as often as I could during her battle with cancer. Towards the end, I was acutely aware of the pain she was carrying. Being clairsentient, I was picking up a great deal of the pain and even though I kept dismissing it, the experience returned. Because Yvonne was in Plymouth England and I was in Perth, Western Australia, I felt very blessed that I was able to share this beautiful connection whenever I could.

Some seven hours before Yvonne actually passed over, I was sending distant healing to her. Then, suddenly, I had a feeling of calm and peace and that she was pain-free. At first I thought that she had slipped away, but when I reached out I realised she was still there but very peaceful and at ease. I was urged to take a note of the time. It was 10.00 pm on a Sunday night in Perth.

We received news the following morning that Yvonne had slipped away in her sleep some 7 and a half hours after my experience on the Sunday night. We were informed that because Yvonne had been in so much pain, her specialist had given her an epidural of morphine to relieve her suffering. I was told Yvonne was given the injection at 3.00 pm G.M.T. on Sunday, which was 10.00 pm Sunday, Perth time, exactly the time that I had experienced that change of state whilst sending healing to Yvonne.

If ever I needed confirmation that Rei-ki II does work, I had it then. I felt privileged to be able to share this time with my beloved sister, Yvonne, and that I was able to help her in passing over, even though I was on the other side of the world. I share the above story with all, especially those who wish to receive this beautiful gift of Rei-ki II.

RENO USA: INAUGURAL SEMINAR

July 1999, marked our first reiki seminar to be held in the U.S. since Beth Gray's retirement in 1992. The seminar conducted by Keven Duff took place in Reno, Nevada, affectionately known as 'The Biggest Little City in the World', and was organised by Karen Duff, Keven's sister.

Although the class was small, there was a tremendous amount of support demonstrated by our international Usui Rei-ki network. Lawrence and Moi Fong, the Malaysian co-ordinators, Siew Peng, part of the Malaysian core support team and Makoto, the Hong Kong co-ordinator, all flew at their own expense to help out with the seminar. Their expertise, hard work and inspiring stories ensured that the class ran smoothly and was filled with lots of unconditional rei-ki love.

Not everything was hard work, however. Outside of class, the helpers had an opportunity to visit some of the local sites, such as Lake Tahoe, Virginia City, an abandoned silver mine, Pyramid Lake and even a casino or two, 'Hot August Nites', a huge annual classic car event with some 40,000 participants from all over the world was just warming up as the seminar was finishing, so the Reno streets were crowded with gorgeous vintage cars. Additionally, everyone feasted on lavish portions of western-style American cooking and not even rei-king for better digestion prevented a few buttons from popping. Keven, Lawrence, Moi-Fong, Siew Peng and Makoto are looking forward to the next U.S seminar, planned for 2000.

Pet hamsters saved in nick of time
By Tay Yen Ping, Kuching, Malaysia

Just recently there was a crisis dealing with my pet hamsters. One of my hamsters had given birth and had three surviving babies about one week old at that time. The cleaning lady had no idea of the birth, so she threw the babies out along with the old mix of sawdust and bedding.

Luckily , my mother caught her before she could actually remove the garbage entirely, called my father and I to help. The babies were buried inside a plastic tank full of sawdust (from five cages of hamster bedding) where the cleaning lady had dumped everything.

We acted quickly and dug out all three, but it seemed too late. Only one of the babies was moving and the other two were cold to the touch and looked dead already.

I suggested my mother give them rei-ki and we had the three baby hamsters wrapped up in tissue and placed in her hands. My mother sat down for a few hours giving them rei-ki treatment and when the energy shut off, we were amazed and delighted to see the babies alive and well, trying to wriggle out of her hands.

At the time of writing, all three hamsters have grown up and left the nest and are healthy, affectionate little animals, thanks to rei-ki.
