Perth Rei-ki II Retreat calls on 'Super Nanny'

A happy group of Reiki II’s in Perth are still savouring the benefits of their recent five days Reiki II Retreat. This has been the fourth year in a row that the group have booked a residential retreat, and there is already another scheduled for next year. The venue is a wonderful holiday homestead called ‘Avalon’, which enjoys an elevated position amid the rolling hills of the Avon Valley an hour and a half out of Perth and just outside the township of Toodyay.

On this occasion there were eighteen in the group: each participant had one hour on the table for four consecutive days with the others hands-on. The structure of the Retreat allowed some free time in the afternoon and there was an evening program after dinner each night.

A new experience for many of the participants was a celebration of an 'Agnihotra Fire Ritual’ at sunset on one evening and sunrise the next day. Evening events also included drumming and sound bowl (John and Penny Whife), and a 'Ghandarva Experience' (with Tom Kenyon). On the last night, a ‘Christmas in July’ meal was followed by a participants’ performance, which was the highlight of the Retreat. Super Nanny was invited to do her thing but was outshone by Super Santa, who saved the night. Laughter and fun went long into the evening, which was topped off with an exchange of ‘Christmas’ gifts in a most unusual way.

Win-win Rei-ki Demonstration

It never ceases to amaze me what Reiki can do! My husband, Nick, and I have been practising rei-ki for more than 12 years now and I have seen and heard of my share of ‘rei-ki miracles’, especially with Nick. He has had diabetes, renal failure and received a transplanted kidney and also had lots of infections over the years, but he has come through these problems quite a lot quicker with rei-ki than if he had to rely solely on his own immune system.

Back in late November 03, he broke the 4th and 5th toes on his left foot. The orthopaedic doctors put him in a walker ‘shoe’ (like plaster but much easier to remove), to stabilise his breaks. We did rei-ki often and he was put back into normal shoes at the end February 04.

Then Nick stepped into a hole while crossing the road a week later, and unbeknown to us, this caused a blood blister on his foot. The podiatrist cut off the top layer of the blister, which with walking turned into a diabetic ulcer. A stay in hospital, off his feet, and another x-ray showed he had broken his 5th little toe again, so it was back into plaster this time, with ulcer and all!

The bone of his little toe had started to heal but at a right angle, leaving a big lump on the side of his foot. The doctors were undisturbed about this and told us that Nick would have to live with this ‘deformity’, (as they put it). The orthotics people at the hospital created a boot for Nick to walk in, which has room in it for the bump on the side of his foot and he has been working for 18 months in the hospital as a personal service attendant. Eight weeks ago, he had formed another ulcer on the part that stuck out from his foot.

Instead of getting a really bad infection, the ulcers have been called superficial but it wasn’t until Nick assisted with rei-ki demonstrations at the Mind Body Spirit Festival that something really amazing happened. On On the Friday, we were so busy at the stand, that Nick demonstrated rei-ki from a wheel chair (not being able to stand for long periods). During this time he told me that he felt his left foot had become very sore, then he felt a grinding sensation and the 4th and 5th toes bones were moving! So I smiled and said: ‘keep doing rei-ki’.

On the Saturday morning, when I went to change his wound dressing we discovered what really was happening. The side of foot that had the bone sticking out at a funny angle was completely flat; his foot looked like a normal foot! We were so excited. What a wonderful proof that even if unwell oneself, rei-ki benefits the giver, as well as the receiver, every time.

When we went back to the podiatrist the look on her face was the best medicine Nick could have had.

'Mani-cures' from Kuala Lumpur

My husband’s friend, a keen golfer, had injured his thumb and suffered constant annoying pain for months. It affected his golf game so, one weekend after a round on the golf course, my husband invited him and his wife for lunch and I introduced him to rei-ki. As soon as I placed my hand on his injured thumb, he felt a very strong energy flow, which lasted for the next twenty minutes while I gave him rei-ki.

When I met him again a few weeks later, he reported that all the pain had gone, even though he had put up with it for months before. He is so amazed at the healing power of rei-ki, we expect him to take the next rei-ki class.

I banged my finger and the nailbed started to darken, indicating bleeding. So I held my other hand on it and could immediately feel the rei-ki energy flowing. The pain temporarily became very intense as was the heat from rei-ki. After a few minutes the rei-ki healing effect became a gentle warmth and, after 15 minutes, all was forgotten, almost as if nothing had happened.

When I broke the soft stem of a house plant, I aligned its two halves and using a splint for support, wrapped the area with cellophane. I then gave rei-ki by cupping my hands over it for a good ten minutes. The ‘wound’ healed and the stem is still growing!

On another occasion, I broke the main stem of a young balsam plant when it was only about 15cm tall. Again, I followed the same method with splinting and rei-ki, and the plant has grown into a bush and given me many flowers for a long, long time.

'Miracle' survival from motorbike accident

My nephew had a serious accident two years ago. He was struck by a car and thrown off his motorcycle. He was so seriously injured, his parents were called to the crash site as the ambulance officers believed he might not survive long enough to reach hospital. On the way to the accident, my sister called and asked me to send Advanced Level rei-ki distant healing to him.

As I didn’t know which were the most serious injuries, I began in the customary rei-ki first position and then asked for guidance as to where the healing was most needed. I was immediately drawn to his neck and abdomen. I later discovered that he had landed on his head, and that the force with which he catapulted over the handlebars had broken his pelvis into seven pieces which caused severe abdominal bleeding. Over the coming days and weeks, I continued to send rei-ki distant healing to him whenever possible.

My nephew did survive the trip to hospital, although his parents were told not to expect him to survive until morning. Although he survived, they were then told he would never walk again. A few days later, the doctors again revised their opinion and said that he would walk with a limp and he’d probably never work again (and would certainly not be able to return to his profession as a spray painter).

Within a month of the accident he was walking, within six months he had no limp. Within a year, he returned to work - as a spray-painter. Thank heavens for the ability to send rei-ki II over distance at any time.

Discerning the Authentic Teaching of Rei-ki

Around the world, rei-ki co-ordinators, practitioners and prospective students in each Usui Rei-ki Network centre constantly hear of competing claims made for various forms of teaching and practicing rei-ki.

Just as unwary purchasers seeking the highest quality timepiece in a rolex watch (backed by decades, indeed centuries of research and quality control in time-keeping and watchmaking) can be misled by spurious imitators, so unfortunately it is these days with rei-ki.

We hear that 'you can learn to do rei-ki from the Internet', you can practice rei-ki after a three hour course or indeed Rei-ki I and II in less than a day's 'teaching'. For those with a hunger for 'quickie' credentials, some folk are induced to part with quite large sums of money to become overnight 'masters'. The truly gullible find themselves drawn in to an expanding series of courses (anything up to rei-ki XV - 15!), for ever larger sums of money and status.

Let's hear about the authenticity of Rei-ki training.

Rei-ki I

First there is the hands-on method which, along traditional lines, we term Rei-ki I (which within the Usui Reiki Network International is taught over a 20 hour, three day weekend program). This involves four energy transfers - ceremonial procedures involving direct contact individually between teacher and student, several hours apart, followed by hands-on practice and feedback. There is training in the techniques for first aid and for formal regenerative treatment as well as self help procedures. There are hours of practice and progressive discernment in energy variances and responses throughout the course.

Most importantly, there is a metaphysical grounding in the association between past trauma and behavioural patterning and the tendency towards certain disease states, so that participants in the training are well prepared for eventualities in healing response and indeed the possibility for healing crisis in acute circumstances.

Rei-ki II

Secondly there is the Advanced Level or Rei-ki II, also an 18 - 20 hour training program over a weekend or three evenings, including homework, which empowers students to work with the healing energy of rei-ki hands-on more intensely than in Rei-ki I, and also to transmit energy over distance - across the room or across the world, with equal potential for regeneration and first aid in emergency conditions. This course also potentiates the further development of telepathic gifts in various ways, according to the innate faculties of the participant. It is required that those who progress to the Advanced Level in Rei-ki review Rei-ki I at least once, and preferably more often, as there is a more subtle understanding which develops in the application of Rei-ki in the context of the Advanced Level. There are two energy transfer procedures, teacher to student, in Rei-ki II.

We do not withhold any aspect of the teaching to be offered at a later stage for more money, more levels or more status points; nor do we recognise any form of teaching or claims to a 'reiki' which spuriously does so. We do not recognise 'quickie' or 'mini' rei-ki courses. We do recommend regular seminar review attendance.

Teaching

Training to teach is a lengthy apprenticeship over many years, followed by a period of probation before certification. Teachers trained within the Rei-ki Training Academy sponsored by the Usui Reiki Network are licensed to teach rei-ki, which is a renewable permit and which can be revoked. Only those teachers currently acknowledged in our literature and newsletter, and on the Usui Reiki Network website, are licensed to teach rei-ki according to the entire tradition laid down by Rev Beth Gray, in obedience to the directives of Hawayo Takata of Hawaii and her mentors Dr Chujiro Hayashi of Tokyo and Dr Mikao Usui of Kyoto Japan, over the last 100 years. Our teachers do not claim to have more healing 'power' than their graduates - the prowess is in the knowledge, technique and wisdom of the teaching method.

At the present time we have qualified educational experts formalizing the criteria for the professional practice and ultimately the teaching of rei-ki in a form which can be registered. As the articles in the Newsletter demonstrate, and as participants in our seminars, reunions and retreats witness, there is a heightened experience of spiritual awareness which develops in the pure practice of rei-ki, which ultimately transcends ego and which strengthens the 'observer' self, devoid of delusion or illusion. Thus any tendency to be gullible is tested and objective truth ultimately surfaces.

Rei-ki healing affects not only physical imbalances but also emotional, mental and spiritual clarity. Rei-ki will teach discernment and pragmatism, as well as trust and idealism.

No more crutches

One Wednesday night we visited the home of friends to watch a football game together. Their 13 y.o. daughter greeted us on crutches, as she had damaged all the ligaments across the top of her foot a few days previously. Her doctor had advised she would require the crutches for weeks.

During the game, I gave rei-ki to her foot for about an hour, by which time the pain had gone and she was able to put her foot on the floor with minimal discomfort. Although she took her crutches to school the following day, she found them to be a nuisance because her foot felt fine. That Friday night she went dancing ... and again on Saturday. We were both thrilled at her rapid recovery.

Computer whiz

One day at the office, I was in a hurry to finish my work when, suddenly, I could not save the file which was open on my computer, and it froze. I waited for a while, hoping it would go back to normal but even the monitor screen went blank. I knew that my computer had been having problems with a virus for the past few days and I was waiting for it to be serviced.

Other staff were busy and, not knowing what else I could do, I thought: why not rei-ki my computer ... no harm trying. So I held my hand on the computer box and felt a lot of energy flowing. Surprisingly, after about 10 minutes of rei-ki, the monitor screen was up again and the file started to run. Then I could finish my work with no problem at all.

While I can’t explain it, since then it has not been necessary to have a technician service my computer and it has not given me any problems – I’m using it as normal.

Distant healing for a friend in need

One night I had a telephone call from a friend who lives interstate. She had felt unwell for some time, with symptoms of nausea, pain in the stomach and pelvic area, and bloating. As I have learned to practice rei-ki at the Advanced level, she requested that I send her rei-ki over distance.

She went to bed, far away, and I commenced sending rei-ki II, starting over the stomach area. I was prompted to say out loud ‘Let go ... just relax now ... relax and let go’. Then I moved my hands to other problem areas and when my hands stopped vibrating and the heat sensation had gone, I finished the rei-ki session, which had lasted about three-quarters of an hour.

When my friend rang the next evening, she said that at the time I was sending rei-ki she was lying in her bed, when she felt intense heat in her stomach area and it seemed she could hear the words ‘let go ... just relax now ... relax and let go’. We found this telepathic confirmation truly remarkable.

She said that afterwards she went into a deep sleep and awoke about 3.00 am with pains in her stomach and intestines; then she passed a lot of wind and had to rush to the toilet. Then she went back to sleep for several hours and when she awoke, she felt better than she had for a long time, with no nausea.
