OBSERVATIONS ON SARS
by Barbara McGregor,
Rei-ki Master Teacher,
Director: Usui Rei-ki Network International. Now that the fear and panic affecting the world over the possible spread of anthrax and smallpox has receded along with the threat of tyranny in one corner of the planet, we have SARS to contend with.
It seems to have been caused by a virus, a possible mutant from the animal world, originating in rural China (the birthplace of many other plagues throughout history). The difference this time is that it won’t take a few decades to spread as was the case with the Black Plague, spread by fleas accompanying the rodents accompanying Genghis Khan’s hordes during the era of the Mongol conquest of the world! The Spanish Influenza epidemic, which killed millions, followed the Communist conquest of so much of Europe/Asia and after the return of soldiers from the fronts of the First World War. Our instant international mobility and our instant awareness through many media of communication, also means instant susceptibility to ‘bugs’ – emotional and physical. Iraq may be on the back burner, but what of North Korea and it all it portends regarding the human condition?
It seems whenever we have had periods of fear and devastation affecting our external physical reality, the aftermath has a parallel in our internal physical world.
SARS kills, when it does, through suffocation and intestinal deterioration. Those whose immunity is high are less likely to succumb to any bug, be it bacterium or virus. Those who do ‘catch’ it, but who have high levels of immunity, are likely to have less serious symptoms and recover faster and more completely.
There are many parts of the world, including China, Hong Kong etc. where spitting is still unfortunately a widespread social habit and also a means of transmission of tuberculosis, caused by bacteria, and other types of ‘bugs’. While inoculation may help prevent tuberculosis etc, social niceties and good hygiene practices, such as covering one’s mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing and not spitting in the street, and washing one’s hands thoroughly at appropriate times, reduce the possibility of contagion drastically.
So one outcome of the greatly increased hygiene consciousness that derives from the SARS outbreak in various parts of the world, may be a reduction in the incidence of other kinds of diseases such as tuberculosis, at a time when the TB bacteria have also developed immunity to antibiotics.
Meanwhile, in many modern metropoles of the world, the risk of death through car accident is statistically higher than SARS. You may think that a sober, focussed driver is at low risk on a freeway, yet there is no accounting for the random effect of an out-of-control driver coming the other way.
On any given day ‘bad luck’ strikes down innocent people in a way which might have been avoided but it ‘just happened’.
So each of us has a guarantee on today, some of us only on the next hour, and beyond that there is no certainty – only fair odds. We are each gamblers in the game of life – but we can improve the odds. In the case of disease it’s all about immunity.
What can you do to improve your immunity?
1.Nutrient support.
Ensure you have a nourishing diet appropriate for you. The best way to be certain is to consult with a well trained naturopath or nutritionist. Certain herbs and extracts such as astragalus, echinacea, olive leaf extract, antioxidants such a pycnogenol, vitamins C, A & E plus zinc (and potassium chloride and iron phosphate if you have a fever) as well as the homoeopathic gelsemium may be helpful at properly prescribed dosages.2.Eliminate toxins.
Drink plenty of water, avoid an excess of alcohol, nicotine, caffeine and other chemicals affecting liver, nervous system and immunity. Regular moderate exercise will also improve your detoxification processes and enhance immunity (but not if you are presently ill and need rest to conserve your vital reserves for healing).3.Practice good hygiene.
In addition to keeping all touch surfaces immaculately clean, wash hands after any possibility of contamination. Essential oils of lavender, tee trea and eucalyptus are powerful anti-viral and anti-fungal as well as anti-bacterial agents (to be used externally).4.Ensure peace of mind.
Meditation and other de-stressing practices, especially rei-ki will maintain a balanced physiology. However stamina, both emotional and physical, comes from the state of mind which is willing to find the hidden advantage in any situation and convert the difficulty to a positive. This is the state of resourcefulness. Too many people think that acceptance of a situation is giving up. Not so. Acceptance means resolutely facing reality, finding your inner strength and harnessing your energy to the flow of the universe.5.Conserve and enhance your vitality.
If you rush everywhere, work long hours, party till late, fret if you can’t control whatever’s happening and do nothing to replenish, you can appear very fit and then be hit ‘out of the blue’ by a stay-put, lie-in-bed-at-home, sudden onset ‘bug’, which forces you to replenish and contemplate your priorities. Rei-ki will radically increase your vitality reserves if you will maintain the habit of using your hands whenever otherwise they might be idle. Keep the energy flowing!
The Metaphysical Meaning of SARSWhen searching out the metaphor for any illness we first consider the effect, the outcome.
In this case, the distinguishing characteristics are not fever, sweating, vomiting, coughing or sneezing – common to many respiratory infections and which symptoms simply indicate that the immune system is activated and the body is attempting to heal. In fact, naturopathically, a fever is regarded as a very good sign of an effective immune system. Most bacteria and viruses die off a few degrees above normal body temperature.
The keynote with SARS is that victims stop breathing, They suffocate. It also appears on autopsy that an intestinal deterioration also occurs.
So taken literally, consider if the environment affecting the person is suffocating in some way – the immediate family or professional environment or on a broader scale, the social/cultural environment and structure. Is there a family or cultural pattern that is suppressive or oppressive? Is there an undercurrent of fear that cannot be outwardly expressed?
Taking into account the intestinal deterioration side effect, consider if, in the family or broader social environment, there is a challenge to an individual’s ‘intestinal fortitude’? Are people in the immediate environment (not necessarily the sufferer who may be responding to the context) in some way ‘gutless’ or ‘lacking guts’?
This is not a judgment, it is the body’s reflection of its affective context and an attempt, just as in dreams and other forms of internal communication, to draw attention to the need for change – if the environment cannot be changed, then the person’s response to that environment needs to change.
Rev Beth Gray always said that the body is the report card for the inner state of consciousness.
SARS is not inevitable nor inexorable. Yet mass hysteria could cause graver consequences to the world economy and the resultant wellbeing of humankind – if we let it.
So – boost your immunity by every means available. Put Rei-ki on top of the list and not just a few minutes a day – at least two hours a day. Keep your hands on!
For those who have trained in the Advanced Level of Rei-ki, please include at least an hour a day World Service distant healing on SARS, so that its advent fulfils its highest potential on planetary consciousness. If you have not yet trained in the Advanced Level of Rei-ki, now might be the time to do so, not only to give more healing support to your friends and family as well as yourself, but also to make a positive contribution to building higher vibrations on a planetary scale.
Meanwhile, go out and lead a normal, happy life. Spread enthusiasm and joy wherever you go and to whomever you meet and counterpoint the gloom and doom which is the forage of the media, disaffecting mass consciousness worldwide.
To experience gratitude for every God-given moment is to accept into your heart unconditional, love here and now. This is the state of Grace. Not one of us can predict tomorrow but we go to bed at night with the expectation that we will awake to the sun emerging over the horizon. And it does.
